Tip calculator
Work out the tip by percentage and split the bill evenly per person.
About the tip calculator
The BapTools tip calculator works out the tip for a given percentage and splits the total bill between people. Use it in restaurants, bars, taxis or while travelling with a group.
Common tip levels
- 10%: the baseline, fine for ordinary service.
- 15%: common in the United States and easy to round up.
- 18 - 20%: a legal minimum in some places, or for excellent service.
- 25%: fine dining, bars and special occasions.
How do you split a bill fairly?
Multiply the bill by the tip rate, add it to the total, then divide by the number of people. This tool performs both steps for you.
Real-world examples
Example 1 — 850,000 bill, 10% tip, 4 people
Tip is 85,000, total to pay is 935,000, and each person pays 233,750.
Example 2 — budgeting a 15% tip for a busy place
On an expected 1,200,000 bill the tip is 180,000, giving 1,380,000 to hand over. Working that out in advance beats doing it at the table.
Example 3 — a venue that adds a fixed service charge
The venue states 30,000 for the group. A 4% tip on 850,000 is 34,000, so the fixed charge is cheaper: 880,000 rather than 884,000.
Example 4 — working out the rate you need
Bill is 600,000 and you want to leave 90,000, so the rate is 15%. Multiply the total by the number of people and you get the shared amount.
When to use it, and when not to
Worth using
- Restaurants, bars, cafes and taxis with a group.
- Travelling abroad, where tipping is normal and sometimes required.
- Splitting a bill evenly when people ordered different amounts.
- Budgeting the tip in advance so you carry enough cash.
Not worth it
- Tipping in Vietnam, where it is not expected and usually calculated on the pre-tax total.
- Adding tax or a service charge into the tip, because tax is not part of it.
- Splitting evenly when everyone ordered different dishes, which is better handled per item.
How to calculate a tip
- Enter the bill total.
- Enter the tip rate, for example 10 for a 10% tip.
- Enter how many people are splitting.
- Press Calculate to see the tip and the amount per person.
Frequently asked questions
Should the tip be calculated on the pre-tax total?
Most restaurants calculate on the pre-tax total. Check your bill and agree with the group.
Is tipping expected?
It is not customary in Vietnam. This tool mainly helps when you travel abroad or want to show appreciation.
What if the total does not divide evenly?
Results are rounded, so amounts can differ by a small amount. Whoever is collecting can cover the difference.
