About the character counter

The BapTools character counter counts characters, words and lines as you type. It runs entirely in your browser and never stores or uploads what you write. It is an essential tool whenever you write content or optimise a page for search.

Which character limits can you check?

  • SEO meta description: Google shows roughly 155 - 160 characters in search results.
  • Facebook posts: up to 63,206 characters, but the preview cuts off after roughly 400.
  • Instagram captions: 2,200 characters, with only the first 30 shown before the "..." link.
  • LinkedIn posts: 3,000 characters, with the first 200 visible before truncation.
  • SEO title tags: keep them under 60 characters so Google does not cut them off.

Real-world examples

Example 1 — SEO meta description

You wrote 178 characters. Google renders roughly 155 to 160, so the last 20 are cut, and that is often exactly where the important keyword sat.

Example 2 — Facebook post

Facebook allows 63,206 characters but only shows about 400 before the "see more" link. Whatever matters most has to live in that first 400.

Example 3 — SEO title tag

A 68-character title gets truncated at about 60 and shows an ellipsis. Keep titles short and put the keyword first.

Example 4 — accented Vietnamese

Học Lập Trình Web Cơ Bản is 24 characters. Each accented letter still counts as one character, not two, so trust the counter for character budgets.

When to use it, and when not to

Worth using

  • Before publishing a meta description, title or slug.
  • Drafting captions for Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn so they do not get cut mid-sentence.
  • Checking a field limit before you paste text into a CMS or upload form.
  • Estimating reading time early, before you invest in a long draft.

Not worth it

  • Measuring file size. Characters and bytes are different things and depend on encoding.
  • Counting Vietnamese words for analytics, because splitting on whitespace treats tôi.đang.viết as one word.
  • Checking a specific app input limit, because every system counts differently.

How to count characters

  1. Paste or type your text into the input area.
  2. The character, word and line totals update as you type.
  3. Press Clear text to start over.
